C7769-60183 - Encoder Strip 24" size
Encoder strips are common on all DesignJet printers and plotters. Every encoder strip has very fine vertical lines that run the full length of the printer. As the carriage moves, a sensor on the carriage assembly counts these lines, so it knows exactly where it is on the scan axis.
When the encoder strip is damaged or dirty, the carriage will not be in the correct position. This can cause print quality problems, like staggered lines. In the case of the DesignJet 500 and 800 ranges of printers, it can also show an error 86:01. This is because the encoder gets very dirty, particularly around the service station area and thinks there is something stopping the carriage movement.
